Do you have a problem with your DPF? See how to solve it

The DPF filter is an important part of modern diesel cars. However, its faults can be frustrating. How to deal with them?

What exactly is a DPF filter?

The current standards for exhaust emissions, as well as the push to create the most environmentally friendly cars possible, means that in modern cars we can encounter elements that were not at all a matter of course a dozen or more years ago. This group includes, among others, the DPF filter. But what is this element and what is it actually responsible for?

Generally speaking, the DPF, also interchangeably called a particulate filter, is a special device whose task is, of course, to reduce particulate emissions from the exhaust system. This is a very important part of modern diesel cars – as particulate matter is the main provoker of smog formation in cities. Thanks to DPF filters, cars are able to reduce their contribution to the formation of this nuisance, which in autumn and winter is a very persistent reality for residents of Polish cities.

The most common problems associated with the DPF filter

One of the reasons DPFs have a less than stellar reputation among car owners is their failure rate. Filters have a habit of wearing out, but in the case of this component, the symptoms are really troublesome, and if we don’t quickly get down to cleaning the filter, our car can start to run badly. In addition, a damaged filter can lead to further malfunctions within the engine and exhaust system.

Of course, the most common type of problems associated with the DPF filter is its clogging. We will be able to notice this very easily – the car will usually independently inform us of a non-functioning filter with a specific message or an illuminated icon on the dashboard. Sometimes we are able to deal with the problem on our own, while other times we will have to wait for a costly replacement – yes, this is another reason for the bad reputation of DPF filters.

Ways to combat DPF trouble – what should you keep in mind?

There are several homemade ways to deal with a clogged DPF filter. Some people use a pressure washer for this purpose, which can be as effective as it is dangerous to the life of the filter. A far worse method, which many drivers also use, is to flush the filter with a special fireplace cleaner. Not only is this ineffective, but on top of that it can make the DPF due for a complete replacement.

If you want to get down to cleaning the DPF yourself, of these methods the best option would be to reach for a pressure washer. However, the safest option will be to have the component replaced at a workshop – it won’t be a long process, plus we will be sure that our new DPF will be able to last for the next few years.
